Could the baby be lying crosswise?
Sometimes it happens that the baby might be lying crosswise. It's very
rare that at the moment of child birth the baby would be lying crosswise,
this is called shoulder labor. These situations are most frequent in women
who have given birth three or more times.
Once the baby
is located in the pelvis head down, can he/she change the position?
In the first pregnancy it is normal that the baby adopts the position
head down at week 34. After that it is difficult for the baby to change
its position without external help due to the reducing amount of space
available for moving around..
In the following pregnancies the baby can be head up, or even lying crosswise
until the last moment and then adopt the head down position moments before
child birth or the opposite: being well positioned and change it.
This happens because the abdomen and uterus muscles have been stretched
after one or more child births and the baby can move easier during the
last weeks of the pregnancy.
Can the mother
help the baby change the position for the moment of child birth? And the
professionals?
There isn't any scientific evidence that certain exercises can help change
the orientation of the baby during pregnancy, but during child birth there
are postures that help the rotation of the baby, like lying on your side
or lying on your front for a while.
The doctors and professionals should recommend the position to adopt at
each moment to help the posture of the baby before child birth.
Does the position of the baby influences in the amount of pain of the child birth?
No. Specially today with the epidural anesthesia. Some mothers fear the
"scarey kidneys" child birth, but it has nothing to do with
the position of the baby. It is due to the uterus contraction pains in
the lumbar area of the mother.
What happens
if the baby comes out bottom first?
In this case the child can be sitting with cross legs on the mothers pelvis,
so we see the feet first, or have the legs up with the feet in front of
the face, presenting only the buttocks first.
This happens in 3% of all child birth. The reasons are: the baby is premature,
multiple pregnancy, malformations in the uterus or an excess of amniotic
liquid.
Today, many gynecologist
decide to do cesarean in every buttocks first child birth. But, some other
consider that a vaginal child birth is possible when the fetus head is
not to big for the mother's pelvis at the moment of child birth and that
the dilatation of the uterus neck is natural, regular and fast. This way
the child can get out bottom first, then the shoulders and finally the
mother will push to get the baby's head out.
This type of child birth requires the mother's permission because of the
risks; if after the body is out the head gets stuck the consequences could
be fatal for the baby.
