If you are interested in the topic "bones of the newborn skull", you might find some useful information in the following paragraphs.

A newborn baby does not have entirely closed skull bones. Openings, the so-called fontanelles, cause the flexibility of the top of the head until the birth and will only close in the course of the first two years of the child.

What is the reason and how sensitive are these spots?
According to the scientists, the reason for this phenomenon can be found thousands of years ago. When the early human beings started to walk, the whole skeleton had to be adapted. Thus, the skeleton of the pelvis had to be altered, i.e. made smaller. For the unborn babies, this meant that they had to pass a birth channel which got narrower and narrower in the course of the millennia. Therefore, they had to adapt themselves to this situation by keeping the form of their head "flexible" until the birth.

All the bones of the newborn skull remain soft and flexible for the expulsion, the skull is divided into several plates which can move against or even on top of each other - as nobody knows how narrow the "way out" is going to be.

Some mothers are a little bit shocked when holding the result of this genius adaptation in their arms shortly after the birth: a baby with an apparently pointed or a crooked head. But in most cases, there is no need to worry, as after a few days, everything gets back into the normal position and the skull restores its symmetrical form. Normally, this is achieved quite quickly, but can also take a couple of weeks depending on the adaptation which was needed.
