Gas in newborns is a phenomenon which often occurs in newborn babies and which is often difficult for the recent parents to cope with.
80% of the newborns suffer from gas which occurs with loud peristaltic sounds and winds. Some babies have crying phases after every meal, 10% of the children suffer from so-called three-month colics.
One of the reasons for the appearance of these colics is the following: Babies who drink very hastily or who drink from a bottle where the teat has a very big hole, often suck a lot of air. If the babies then do not burp sufficiently, the air gets into the intestines where it can cause the colic.
But these colics also depend on the character of the baby, on the fact that their day/night rhythm has not been developed yet, on the reactions of the parents and on many other factors.
Parents have to remember that the first weeks of life is a very stressful phase for the child and for the parents. Every day, the child faces a lot of new impressions and has adapt itself to new circumstances. Sensitive babies sometimes really get stressed out and express their stress by crying.
Therefore, these colics are not an illness but a state. Most of the babies who suffer from them, develop very well, but have frequent and excessive crying attacks, typically in the evening. These crying attacks start in the first weeks of life and stop after 3 - 5 months. On an average, 10 - 20% of all babies cry at least during 3 days of the week for up to 3 hours.
