Newborn nursing care plans

If the parents come home with the new member of the family from the hospital, their whole life will change all of sudden, as the baby will now determine most of their life.

Therefore, in order to organise their daily life at home, it is quite helpful to follow some newborn nursing care plans which consist of the following:

1.) Changing diapers
The diapers of your newborn should be changed every time, the baby has urinated or excreted stool to prevent that the sensitive baby skin will get irritated. Clean the baby's bottom with a cleansing tissue and verify that the skin and especially the folds are completely clean and dry before the new diaper is put on. It is very important that diapers have the appropriate size, i.e. they should not be too tight or too loose on the baby.

2.) Nursing the umbilical cord
Before bathing or changing the baby, the old gauze bandage which is wrapped around the umbilical cord should be removed. After having finished the bath or the washing of the baby, clean the area around the umbilical cord with seventy per cent alcohol and a small bandage. After having done so, put some of the seventy per cent alcohol on a clean small gauze bandage and carefully wrap it around the umbilical cord. It is sufficient to nurse the umbilical cord once a day.

3.) Bathing the baby
It is not necessary to bath the baby every day, as the baby's skin is very sensitive and can dry out very quickly. Before bathing the baby, make sure that the room temperature is between 22° and 25°C and that the water temperature is between 32° and 37°C. Use baby skin care products to bath the baby and apply a moisturizing lotion or a baby oil after the bath.

It is recommended that the skincare products for the baby is not changed too often in order to avoid irritations of the skin.

These are of course only the main aspects of nursing the baby, and the newborns nursing care plans also include the brushing of the baby's hair, cutting its nails, cleaning its nose and ears, if necessary. It is obvious that all nursing activities should be carried out with the greatest possible caution in order to not hurt the newborn.
