Water birth involves getting in a bath of warm water (37 º C approximately)
and delivering the baby there.
The baby doesn't drown in a water birth because it wont stay more than a few minutes under water, and while it's connected to the mother through the umbilical cord there is no danger since the baby can get its oxygen directly through the unbilical cord. The specialists suggest
that water birth actually reduces the stress of being born compared to
a typical delivery where you find yourself in a room with lots of lights
and air conditioning (the theatre) after coming out of a warm comfortable
place in your mom's belly. Then in the theatre the doctor takes you and
cuts the umbilical cord, measures and weighs you away from your mother.
With the water birth, the baby comes out into a similar warm water environment. The first moments of their life are much more relaxing. The woman also feels more relaxed in the warm water where the job of giving birth gets easier. In the bath for the water birth
women can adopt different positions, the supine position, on the side,
sitting down, on the knees. Water birth is not recommended in cases of high blood pressure, hypertension, cardiopathy, gestosis and birth before week 34. |
